Week In Review

It has been a week since I launched this blog on Christmas day, and I'm still enjoying it.  Yes, an entire week, and I haven't lost interest yet.  :-)

I have already accomplished one goal...launching the blog.  Believe it or not, just getting going is the toughest part.  Inertia is a powerful force.  After one week, I have learned the following:

• Thomas Edison was quoted as saying: "Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration."  This can be applied to writing.  It is easy to be inspired to write a post about something for which you feel passion, but actually writing it is the hard part.  I think my posts to date are good, but they are not what I envisioned in my mind.  I hope to continue to get better as I create more content for BackingIn.
• I'm using WordPress as my blog software, and choosing a WordPress theme is daunting.  I've tried about a dozen so far, and I'm still not satisfied.
• WordPress is extremely powerful and FREE.  There are so many themes, widgets, etc. that I don't regret getting out of software development three years ago.  There is so much free software out there, combined with cheap labor from India, it is very difficult to make a good living as a developer in the United States.
• I am still trying to find my 'voice'.  I feel that it is important to not use profanity, not because I'm uptight, but I feel it is lazy writing.  I also wanted to create content that was accessible to a wide rage of ages.  When I'm writing, I sometimes feel constrained by the idea that my nieces and nephews and other family members may read what I write.  I'm beginning to wonder if I should entertain my darker thoughts on the blog or keep the content light.
• I need to resist the urge to edit old posts, and if the content changes, I should note the change in an update to the post.  Fixing grammar and spelling is permissible, but I shouldn't add or change the content.  The posts should be like newspaper articles.  If I need to add or update, I should add a addendum or supplemental post.
• I wish people would comment.  I think I'm mostly talking to myself, but it's only been a week!
